Why Foam Rolling?

At Move Functional Fitness, you will see all of our athletes and adults begin each group fitness class with foam rolling. Foam rolling is a game-changer for pre-workout routines, and renowned strength coach Mike Boyle strongly advocates for its use. Here’s why you should include foam rolling before you hit the gym.

1. Enhances Flexibility and Range of Motion

Foam rolling helps to temporarily release muscle tightness and open a window of opportunity to move better. Contrary to popular belief, foam rolling does not break down ‘knots’ or adhesions. Physical change does not happen that quickly, but the nervous system can respond. According to coach Kevin Carr, mechanoreceptors in the body respond to the foam rolling by toning down the nervous system. This opens up a window for real physical change to happen during the active stretch and movement prep portions of the warm-up.

2. Boosts Blood Flow

Foam rolling also moves fluid around the body. All tissue has fluid in it (blood flow is important). Foam rolling moves the fluid around and replenishes the tissue. Stimulating blood flow to the muscles through foam rolling ensures they receive more oxygen and nutrients. This can enhance performance and reduce injury risk by warming up the muscles and making them more pliable.

3. Mental Preparation

Foam rolling also offers a mental transition into your workout. It gives you a moment to focus on your body, set your workout intentions, and mentally prepare, enhancing your overall exercise experience.
